How to Self-Diagnose to Get the System Working Again Before Calling Us Out

May 20, 2025

We know how frustrating it is when your air conditioner suddenly stops working—especially during a Canberra heatwave or a freezing winter morning.

While we’re always ready to help, there are a few quick checks you can do that might save you time, money, and a call-out. Here’s a simple self-diagnosis guide to help get your system running again before you give us a ring.

1. Check the Power Supply

It might sound obvious, but it’s the first thing to rule out:

  • Is the unit switched on at the wall?
  • Has the circuit breaker tripped in your switchboard?
  • For ducted systems, check the isolation switch near the outdoor unit.

If there’s no power going to the system at all, it may be an electrical issue—this is where we step in.

2. Clean or Check the Filters

Clogged filters can cause poor airflow or make your system shut down:

  • Turn off the unit and remove the filters (usually found in wall splits or return air vents for ducted systems).
  • Give them a gentle vacuum or rinse under lukewarm water.
  • Allow them to fully dry before reinstalling.

If your system starts working better afterwards, this may have solved the issue.

3. Confirm the Settings on the Remote

It’s surprisingly common to have the wrong mode or temperature setting selected:

  • Make sure the unit is set to cooling, heating, or auto, depending on the season.
  • Set the temperature a few degrees higher or lower than the current room temperature to trigger the system.
  • Double-check the fan speed and any timers or sleep modes that might delay startup.

4. Check for Error Codes

Most modern systems display error codes when something’s wrong:

  • Look at the indoor unit’s LED lights or screen.
  • If there’s a flashing light or code, note it down—this can help us diagnose the issue faster.
  • Some brands will show codes on the remote itself.

5. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

If it’s safe to do so, have a quick look outside:

  • Is the unit blocked by leaves, dirt, or debris?
  • Can you hear the fan running?
  • Is there ice or frost building up on the unit?

Restricted airflow or freezing could indicate a larger issue, but cleaning the area around the unit can help.
